Products Safe For Extensions (and Ones to Avoid)

One of the biggest factors in the longevity and look of your extensions? The products you use at home.

While extension hair is 100% real human hair, it’s not exactly the same as the hair growing from your scalp. Extension hair goes through intense processing to match your color and texture. That means it doesn’t receive the natural oils from your scalp and needs a little extra love to stay soft, shiny, and tangle-free.

Let’s break down what products help your extensions thrive—and which ones to avoid.

What to Look For in Extension-Friendly Products

Professional, Sulfate-Free Shampoos

Sulfates are harsh detergents that strip away oils—and for extensions, that means stripping away the moisture they desperately need. Professional, sulfate-free shampoos keep your extensions clean without drying them out or causing premature wear at the bonds.

Moisture + Hydration

When reading labels, look for words like moisture, hydrating, or smoothing. Extensions are thirsty! Moisture-rich products help maintain softness, shine, and flexibility, preventing that dry, brittle feeling.

Leave-In Conditioners + Lightweight Oils

A good leave-in conditioner or a lightweight, water-soluble oil (like Oi Oil) helps keep extensions silky and manageable. These products replace what extensions can’t get naturally from your scalp oils.

Products to Avoid with Extensions

Bond Builders (like Olaplex or K18)

These are amazing for compromised, chemically damaged hair—but not for extensions. Bond builders are loaded with protein, and since extensions don’t repair themselves the way natural hair can, too much protein will make them feel dry, stiff, and tangly.

Anything Labeled “Repair”

If a product is marketed for “repair” or “strengthening,” it usually means it contains protein. Great for stressed-out natural hair, but a no-go for extensions. Stick with hydration instead.

Heavy Oils + Silicones

Products that are too heavy can coat extensions, leading to buildup that dulls the hair and even weakens bonds. Always choose lightweight, professional-grade options.

Extensions are an investment, and the right products are the difference between silky, soft, long-lasting hair and dry, brittle extensions that don’t hold up.

Caring for your extensions doesn’t have to be complicated—it’s just about choosing products that love your hair as much as you do.
